Children’s Book Author Jessie Sima Visits Grammar School

Last week, Grammar School librarians Ingrid Abrams and Joanna Sondheim hosted author and illustrator Jessie Sima, who presented to students in grades Pre-K through 2nd grade. The younger students were familiar with Ms. Sima’s picture books Not Quite Narwhal, Harriet Gets Carried Away and Love, Z, while many of the 1st and 2nd graders have also read Snow Pony and the Seven Miniature Ponies. “Not only are her books fun and funny, but they are great at delivering messages of inclusivity and kindness in a genuine way that kids can relate to,” Ms. Sondheim said. Ms. Sima elaborated on her thought process when developing story ideas, from character ideation to plot developments. As she demonstrated developing a new character for the students -- a dinosaur with a top hat -- she even had a child come up and draw himself into the scene, illustrating how an author can always be a part of the stories he or she tells.
