Columbia Prep Students Visit a Genetics Research Lab

By Ilya Yashin, Prep School science teacher

Recently, 11 Columbia Prep students visited a genetics research laboratory at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center. They had been invited by the head of the lab, Dr. Samuel Sternberg, who has been at the forefront of research into CRISPR-Cas9, a revolutionary gene-editing technology. The students learned firsthand from Dr. Sternberg about the science behind CRISPR and the particular research interests of his lab, including an important discovery it had recently made. Afterwards, the students toured Dr. Sternberg's laboratory and learned about the nitty-gritty details of the daily life of a lab at the front line of science.
