February 22 is the Mosaic Hispanic Heritage Festival at CGPS

On Friday, February 22 from 5 - 7:00 p.m., the Mosaic Committee is hosting the Hispanic Heritage Festival at CGPS. Grammar School and Middle School students have been hard at work preparing a celebration to commemorate Hispanic culture.

“The Mosaic Committee has planned cultural events for many years,” Grammar School Student Affairs coordinator Doretha Levine explained. “From Chinese New Years, to Diwali, the Festival of Lights, to the African Art Festival, each celebration honors different culture with music, dancing, food and arts and crafts.” The goal of these festivities is not just to have fun, but also to educate the community and cultivate appreciation for the diverse cultures found at Columbia Grammar & Preparatory School.

The Parents Association Mosaic Committee has been hard at work organizing the Hispanic Heritage celebration. Mosaic co-chairs Beatrice Jonah and Judith Marson-Rogers have spearheaded the efforts. “We have a sizable community of families with a Hispanic/Latinx background and we felt it was important to celebrate their culture and to share with other families in our community who may be unfamiliar,” they said.

This year, the Mosaic Hispanic Heritage Festival will feature two Latin dance presentations — one from the Grammar School and one from the Middle School. For weeks, both groups have been practicing for 90 minutes every Friday after school with dance instructor Enrico Mayuga.

Mr. Mayuga is a Teaching Artist with Dancing Classrooms, a non-profit organization that brings social dance classes to New York City schools. Through his work at Dancing Classrooms, Mr. Mayuga, who has a master’s from Harvard’s Graduate School of Education, has taught more than 10,000 students!

Students will be showing off several new dance forms, including Meringue and the Tango/Cha Cha. Attendees can expect a welcome  from Grammar School Director Sarah McLean, the two Latin dance performances, a photo booth and crafting area and an array of traditional Hispanic dishes.
