By Sarah Cusick, Prep School theater department head

On May 16, Production Workshop students Philip A. ’20, EstherGrace D. ’20, Nina J. ’20, AnaBella K. ’19, Antonia K. ’21, Sarah M. ’19 and theater department faculty Sarah Cusick, Jason Maracani and Olivia Salzano took a field trip to New Jersey to tour Rose Brand. Rose Brand is one of the leading providers for all theatrical, events and entertainment production supplies in the world. Rose Brand manufactures custom theatrical and event drapery, backdrops and virtually anything sewn with fabric. Their venues range from high school auditoriums to Broadway to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to Radio City Music Hall to the 2019 NCAA Final Four Tournament.

In New Jersey, the group met with Executive Digital Printing Specialist Molly Block, Director of Products Joshua Alemany and Director of Special Projects Tom Sullivan, who shared stories about their careers in theater, as well as case studies of specific Rose Brand projects. Students and teachers went on a walking tour of Rose Brand’s massive 150,000 square-foot facility where they fabricate custom curtains, track systems and digitally printed fabric. Walking through the warehouse gave students a chance to see current projects and discuss Rose Brand’s process from initial creative idea through developing a concept and finally to a finished product. The Production Workshop students gained first-hand knowledge of a key player in the world of theater and got some excellent career advice as well.
