PS Students Attend New England Young Writers' Conference

By Barrie Allen, 11th grade Dean

Recently, two Columbia Prep juniors, Oamiya H. and Imani C., attended the New England Young Writers' Conference, a three-day event held annually at Middlebury College in Vermont. Oamiya and Imani were joined by around 100 kids mostly from around the New England area. The rigorous application process included the submission of work that was used to place them in a main category, such as poetry, non-fiction, fiction and others. Although there were workshops that corresponded with these placements, students had the option to explore other genres through craft workshops, led by authors. The days consisted of free writing periods as well, during which students could either schedule conferences with their workshop teacher or use the time to develop any pieces they would like. Students also had the opportunity to hear readings from the authors that attended the conference. In addition, there were fun activities such as acapella groups, open mic, student performances and student readings every night.

“The conference truly helped re-spark my passion for writing; I met so many wonderful student and adult writers that supported me in my writing. I loved the opportunity to immerse myself in many genres of literature and am so grateful for the people who attended the conference.”

- Imani

“The conference was like a slice of paradise. It was just so genuinely heartwarming to be around other people who value the art of writing as much as we did. The students, authors and peaceful Vermont atmosphere created the perfect environment for the generation of new ideas.”
